Playing Mods

This section of the Star Haven Documentation is for people who want to learn how to play Paper Mario mods.

If you encounter any issues, please ask for help on the Star Haven Discord in the #setup-help channel.

  1. Ensure you have a Paper Mario (USA) ROM in .z64 format

    You can dump a ROM from your cartridge using a cartridge reader.

    If your ROM is in .n64 or .v64 format, you can convert it to .z64 format using the swapper.

  2. Download the mod you want to play

    You can download mods at starhaven.dev/mods. It should have the file extension .bps or .ips.

  3. Patch your ROM with the mod you downloaded

  4. Play the patched ROM

    You will need:

    • A Nintendo 64
    • A Nintendo 64 controller
    • An Expansion Pak
    • A flashcart such as the SummerCart64

    The process varies between flashcarts, but in general, you will need to:

    1. Put the patched ROM on the flashcart SD card
    2. Replace the Jumper Pak with the Expansion Pak
    3. Insert the flashcart
    4. Turn on the console
    5. Have fun!
